The best gift I got was pretty inexpensive. It was a calendar with stickers for each month and milestone. Like first tooth, firts haircut, pulls self up, says mama, etc. It makes it so much eaiser to jot down things on a calender than to go find the baby book, flip to the right page and write it down (esp. when you’ve got a hungry baby, dinner and laundry to contend with) They sell on ebay pretty cheap and you can find coordinating baby books too. Try the search: baby calendar stickers.
    Hope it helps

buy her a box of diapers the boxes normally are $20 and it will help her alot, believe me on my next baby shower that is the only thing I will ask for.

    Gift cards are always good.

I had a friend who recently held her baby shower and what I did was go to the local “dollar” stores and got all kinds of good stuff. I also went to the sale racks in Wal Mart and made her a basket…It was actually a big hit….

Get a few “need” items. Bottles, blankets, pacifers, etc. Trust me you can never have enough.

daipers daipers daipers! usually alot of stuff that they need is a good gift, since you can never have enough of it…on my baby shower, the things i need is all ill ask for, things like stroller will be nice but daipers is better belive it or not

    How about something personal?
A baby hat that you embroider the baby’s name on…
Make a blank scrapbook with the baby’s name on the cover…
    Coupons for future babysitting…
I often give a bag of chocolate bars with a label on the bag that says, “mommy’s little survival kit.”
I also love to give baby towels and baby wash… We use our baby towels even on our 4 and 5 year olds. They love the “hood” and we truly wear them out. Most other families do the same. It’s better than a frilly outfit that baby will outgrow in a few weeks!!

a nice frame for a pix of the baby
a coupon good for a few hours of housecleaning or babysitting
    a big box of diapers
some nice shower gels, etc. for her (they even have them in the dollar store)

Try things that you don’t think other people will think of. Most people don’t think of the future (babies don’t wear newborn sizes for months), so try any clothing that isn’t newborn or 0/3 months. Other things might be a baby memory book, baby medical kit (with thermometer, bulb syringe, gas drops, etc). Something I wish I would have received was a baby how-to book, like What to Expect the First Year (which I didn’t think was as informative as What to Expect When You’re Expecting, but still good), homemade blankets are really thoughtful (if you want an easy one, try making a rag quilt–so easy), classical music cds. Things that help make mom’s life easier: baby carrier, vibrating/bouncy baby chair, baby swing. One of my favorite gifts was a boppy pillow. I use it every time I breastfeed my baby, and the one we received alos had straps to hold the baby in a sitting position so he can watch me cook in the kitchen or do other chores. If the family likes to camp, I’d give them Skin-So-Soft, from Avon, because it is a bug repellant that is safe for babies. It’s just like a baby oil with a fragrance that mosquitoes don’t like. We used it on our baby when he was two months old, and he didn’t get a single bite. Another thoughtful idea is a subscription to a parenting magazine. Some mothers don’t think their babies will get diaper rash, but it is pretty unavoidable, so diaper rash cream is a great buy. An umbrella stroller is a good gift too, and you can get those pretty cheap. The cheapest I’ve seen is $12. We bought a fancy big stroller with a car seat, but we kind of want a smaller umbrella stroller for croweded places or tight squeezes, or for when we have to fly. If all else fails, give a gift certificate for Babies R’ Us.
