I bought my sister a Baby Bunch – baby layette items (onesies, bibs socks etc) wrapped to look like a bouquet of flowers. You can get them at:

She absolutely loved it and was the most unique gift at the baby shower. You can’t go wrong!
Yes the boppy is a lifesaver!
Things I realized I needed after having the baby:
A microwave bottle sterilizer- It’s really annoying having to boil bottles and nipples.
Diapers-pampers swaddlers or huggies gentle care in size newborn and size 1
washcloths and towels for baby
waterproof mattress pads
earths best wipes-name says it all. they are the BEST!
crib sheets
medical care kit
These are some essential things that i use every day and while baby clothes and toys are cute, she will have more use for practical things.
Edit: Also a maid service. I had merry maids come and clean the house the first week i was home because I was too exhausted and busy to do anything.
Well, the obvious answer would be to pick something off her registry. Most people register for stuff because they would like to receive it. But, one cute idea I’ve seen is to get a clear egg carton, then ball up 12 pairs of baby socks and put them in the carton like little colorful eggs. Then tie the carton shut with a pretty ribbon. That would be very appropriate as Easter is on Sunday.
Or, maybe you could do a basket for your sister, not the baby. A spa or mani/pedi gift certificate, snacks, a book if she likes to read, a coupon for 2 hours of baby sitting, etc.
Good luck!
A family member of mine just had her first baby, so I did a big basket of items for her. Instead of a basket, though, I got her the clothes hamper she registered for and then filled it with blankets, diapers, and other things off of her registry. I liked filling the hamper because I knew that she would be able to use it and not just end up with a basket that would take up space somewhere.
I always buy a pack o diapers because they can never have enough of those. I usually also figure out when the baby is going to be 6-9months and buy clothes in that size because they get enough newborn clothes. Another great idea is a gift certificate for newborn pics. it is a additional cost to having a baby that no one ever thinks about.
Get her a gift bag of different things that are most needed and sometimes forgot to be asked for or bought. Throw in 2 packs of the Gerber onesies in 0-3 months, a pack of burp clothes, a pack of bibs, some mylicon drops, gripe water, socks, sunglasses that strap on to protect eyes for the summer (since I’m guessing is when baby will be born), ect. There are a lot of things that are small that a mommy needs, but forgets to buy!
my sis gave my a diaper bag
filled with all essential things
* toys
* safety aid kit
* wipes
* pacifiers
* bottles
* a teddy bear she made at a store, and recorded her voice in it, with clothes
i loved it….
i also got one of those coussins to feed the baby, its still very pratical at 9 months old
Give her something for HER. Maternity PJs and slippers to wear after birth. A hospital kit with shampoo, soap, etc.
DIAPERS are something i appreciated VERY much and no one wanted to buy them for me. You can make her a diaper cake, which makes it look very cute…
well i just had my baby shower last month on the 15th and i say the best things i got were a baby bath tub, play pen and a swing… the baby bath tub is the best idea tho if she dosent already have one… hope this helps

So not really on the same topic as your post, but I found this today and I just can’t resist sharing. Mrs. Agathe’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him, “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you the check. Oh, and by the way…don’t worry about my Doberman. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT under ANY circumstances talk to my parrot!” When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Agathe’s apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen. But just as she had said, the dog simply laid there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”
