~~Get the nicest gift you can actually afford, staying within your budget. Not overspending makes giving the gift very enjoyable. There is no given amount, it is just what you can comfortably afford.~~
I think it depends on how well you know the person/persons having the baby. if not to well then at least close to twenty(baby stuff is kind of expensive) if very close friends then what you feel like you’ll probably buy stuff for the kids as they get older too.
You can spend any amount you wish really, whatever is within your budget. Please do ignore those nasty registries though, they’re the epitome of tactless. Anything you get for the new mother will be appreciated.
If you are a casual friend, I would say about $20 is a decent amount
